The theatre world is always excited to hear about a new Sondheim musical and news has emerged that his project Bunuel may be heading for Broadway.
Bunuel is an adaptation of two Luis Bubuel movies (The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie and The Exterminating Angel) by Stephen Sondheim and David Ives
The public Theatre in New York produced a workshop in August, but only of the first act. Sondheim, who is famous for taking his time, has since finished the rest of the score.
That cast includes Sierra Boggess, Shuler Hensley, Marc Kudisch and Nancy Opel, and reaction to the workshop was extremely positive. Some who were there compared the score to Passion.
Joe Mantello directed the workshop and is set to direct the premiere production slated for The Public Theatre in fall 2017. The producer is Scott Rudin.
It will be interesting to see who is in the final cast and what the show is actually called, as Brunuel is said to be only the working title.
