Dreamgirls performs nightly in the West End to packed houses at The Savoy theatre. It is a production that was long-awaited for fans of the Krieger-Tom Eyen musical.
West End producer supremo Sonia Friedman is preparing to take the production to Broadway, no doubt hoping to replicate the success on the great white way.
The new Dreamgirls revival adds elements of the hit film version to the original – namely the addition of the song ‘Listen’. It stars Amber Riley as Effie White, in the role that Jennifer Holliday made her own, brought to the big screen by superbly by Jennifer Hudson.
Dreamgirls opened to rave reviews and has recently extended it ticket sales until October this year. Our editor said:
“When Amber Riley first sang “the” song from Dreamgirls on Glee, it proved she was a real talent. When Amber Riley sings “the” song in Dreamgirls at the end of Act One of the musical, life, the Savoy erupts into a tsunami of barely controlled adulation and respect. It is one of many extraordinary moments in a production which teems with them. It may have taken Dreamgirls decades to get to the West End, but it has been worth the wait.”
Pedigree for Dreamgirls is strong, having been directed and choreographed by Michael Bennett in the original Broadway production. Such talent has not guaranteed it’s presence on stages around the world. Rarely has Dreamgirls been revived and the current success in London has obviously given producers on Broadway the confidence to pencil in dates.
